60% Vote Undermines Our Schools

Why Elmont residents should come out in large numbers to support public education.

Superintendents Al Harper and Dr. Ferrie are busy informing the community about the upcoming 2012-13 budgets.  The Superintendents and designees are visiting local civics and have said they will present the two school district budgets to any group desirous of hearing directly from them.  The budget and school board vote is held annually on the third Tuesday of May.  This year’s vote is scheduled for May 15, and polls are open from 6 AM to 9 PM.  Elmont residents vote at polling stations located at each of the six elementary schools Alden Terrace, Dutch Broadway,

Clara H Carlson, Covert, Gotham Ave, Stewart Manor and the school district office located at 135 Elmont Road.

Individual Stories Impact Locally And Beyond

Allyson PhillipsIn her welcoming remarks, 2012 Black History Month Celebration chairperson Allyson Phillips noted, “We are here today to tell our story because stories matter…because they connect us to our own past, present and future.”

The “Collaboration of Song and Spoken Word” portion of the program highlighted words, actions and accomplishments that substantiate Black history, thus bringing a community’s lively race, culture and religion into the mainstream. Phillips noted that “community cannot be applied in small a context because it is not a small word, but an international concept. Even these redistricting lines, she added, are but a partial definition of community.”

Is Religion A Force For Good In The World?

"In a world of globalization and rapid social change does religion provide the common values and ethical foundations that diverse societies need to thrive in the 21st century? Or, do deeply held religious beliefs promote intolerance, exacerbate ethnic divisions, and impede social progress in developing and developed nations alike? To encourage a far-ranging discussion on one of human kind’s most vexing questions, the 6th semi-annual Munk Debate will tackle the resolution: be it resolved, religion is a force for good in the world" Munk Debates.  Munk Debates is a site well worth the membership fee of $10.00 - Join.

Stephen Fry says "Amost as many words have been written about Christopher Hitchens since he died as he would write in a typical working week. He was one of very, very few people on earth whom I would have missed just as much had I never had the pleasure and fortune of knowing him. He lit fires in people’s minds. He was an educator."

Today, we are talking to people about sustainable economic development, because we think it's important to show support for key issues that affect our community - like places in the Elmont for young professionals to live, shop and be entertained; like keeping families closer together and rebuilding the economic and social pillars of the community.
