As the County considers the prospects of a privatized bus system, commuters, residents and taxpayers are rightfully concerned about the operation and cost. Unfortunately, the contract does little or nothing to answer these questions. I am also concerned about prospective local route cuts, fare increases and the lack of information surrounding the process. And, I expect that the administration will be prepared to clarify these important questions during the hearing. If I were on the rules committee, I would have voted 'no' in the committee given the lack of information available. Certainly, if these issues are not clarified Monday during the County Legislature hearing, I would be forced to vote 'no' on the contract if I were a County Legislator. Bus service is not a luxury, it is a necessity. These issues are too important to not have answers for commuters, residents and taxpayers of Nassau County.
